DARKTOWN BATTERY aka BASE-BALL MECHANICAL BANK 1 COLOR ADVERTISING CARD FLYER
A pleasing & very finely detailed one color advertising card flyer insert showing the "Darktown Battery" aka "Base-Ball" toy mechanical bank. An interesting "Base-Ball Bank" ad flyer. Stevens mechanical bank card was issued with the Stevens name on the imprint.
Around 98% of all the one color Stevens ad flyers known either have the J. Imprint on the front under the instructions (as is the case with this example) or are blank on the section under the instructions.
The reason for this is that the one color type of flyer with instructions was usually intended to be inserted inside the wooden box with the bank before leaving the factory with the J. Stevens maker's attribution on the flyer (or blank to leave a space for the retailer to have an option to rubber stamp their name).
Only rarely do one color insert card examples turn up (issued by Stevens) with matching color imprints of retail store names or wholesale distributor names. This flyer insert card is printed on thinner paper stock than a standard ad card of the type handed out to advertise the bank. The card measures 5 1/2 inches by 3 3/16 inches.The card has a tiny thin line of soiling at the top edge & also at part of the right border. Otherwise it is in very sharp & fresh crisp near mint condition.
Griffith is said to have obtained this insert flyer ad card during a visit to the old J. This card has a pleasing pedigree having previously resided in three significant mechanical bank collections including: F.Griffith, Bill Jones, James Maxwell. Note: the example we are offering in this listing is the exact example pictured in the Morphy Mechanical Banks Book on page 380.
